Traditional banking is archaic. We know this. It is slow, it relies on manual settlement, and it is buried under layers of legacy infrastructure that date back to the mid-20th century. Stablecoins take that same basic premise—I give you money, you hold it and give me a receipt—and put it on a ledger that actually moves at the speed of the internet. That is the fundamental tension we are dealing with right now.
The Myth of Decentralization in Stability
The first thing we need to be honest about is that most stablecoins aren't decentralized. Whether it is Tether or USDC, you are essentially engaging with a centralized issuer that acts like a narrow bank. They take your dollars, they buy short-term liquid assets like Treasury bills, and they issue you a token as a claim check. The difference is that a bank uses your money to make loans—the fractional reserve model—whereas stablecoin issuers claim to back every token one-to-one.
For builders, this distinction is huge. In a traditional bank, your deposits are an entry in a private database. They are slow to move and subject to the bank’s operating hours. In the stablecoin world, that deposit becomes a bearer asset. It can move 24/7 without a middleman approving the transaction. This is why we seeing such a massive explosion in stablecoin volume; it’s not because people necessarily love crypto, it’s because it’s a better way to move value across borders without waiting five days for a SWIFT wire.
Revenue Models and the Treasury Trap
Let’s talk about how these entities actually make money. A traditional bank lives and dies by the net interest margin. They pay you 0.01% on your savings and lend it out at 7%. Stablecoin issuers have an even better deal. They take your cash, give you a token that pays zero interest, and then they dump that cash into U.S. Treasuries that are currently yielding around 5%. They are essentially printing money with zero interest expense.
This is why every major player in fintech is currently trying to launch their own stablecoin. If you can attract a billion dollars in deposits and not have to pay interest on them, you have a massive, low-risk revenue engine. For the founder building on top of these protocols, you have to realize that you are essentially building on the back of a giant hedge fund that happens to issue a currency. If the yields on Treasuries drop, the incentives for these issuers shift, and that could change the stability of the entire ecosystem.
Risk Assessment: Regulation vs. Code
In traditional banking, the primary safeguard is the government. You have FDIC insurance and the Federal Reserve acting as the lender of last resort. If a bank fails, the system is designed to catch the fallout. With stablecoins, the safeguard is supposed to be the audit or the transparency of the reserves. But as we’ve seen, transparency is relative.
If you are integrating a stablecoin into your product, you are taking on a new kind of risk. You aren't just worried about the price of the asset; you are worried about the regulatory status of the issuer. If a government decides to freeze the bank accounts of a major stablecoin issuer, those tokens on the chain effectively become worthless overnight. A traditional bank account is harder to seize en masse, but a smart contract can be blacklisted with a single command.
What This Means for Founders
If you are a builder, the biggest takeaway here is that stablecoins are the bridge, not the destination. We are currently in a transitional phase where we are using these tokens to patch the holes in the legacy financial system. But you shouldn't assume the current leaders will be the ones standing in five years. The regulatory pressure is mounting, and the "narrow bank" model of stablecoins is very likely to be folded into the existing banking regulators' oversight.
My advice to founders is to build with portability in mind. Don't marry yourself to a single stablecoin. If you are building a payment app or an AI agent that needs to settle transactions, build a layer of abstraction that allows you to switch between USDC, PYUSD, or whatever comes next. The underlying tech is solid, but the entities issuing these tokens are still vulnerable to the same pressures that have destroyed banks for centuries.
Stablecoins are essentially banks that have traded their regulatory safety net for international speed. As a founder, you have to decide if that trade-off is worth the risk for your specific use case.
The Future of the Ledger
We are going to see a convergence. Traditional banks are already experimenting with their own tokenized deposits, and stablecoin issuers are applying for banking licenses. The wall between the two is crumbling. In the next few years, the distinction between a "bank account" and a "stablecoin wallet" will likely disappear for the end user.
The winners in this space won't be the ones who shout the loudest about decentralization. The winners will be the ones who provide the most utility while maintaining enough transparency to satisfy the people with the badges. We are seeing a shift from "move fast and break things" to "move fast and stay compliant." It’s less exciting, but it’s the only way this becomes a multi-trillion dollar industry.
Building in this space requires a healthy dose of skepticism. Don't look at a stablecoin as a neutral technology. Look at it as a financial product with a specific set of risks and a specific set of owners. If you understand the incentives of the issuer, you can better protect the users who are using your tools. The math works, the speed is real, but the human element—the management of the reserves—remains the single point of failure.
Keep your eyes on the yields and the legislative sessions. That’s where the real story of stablecoins is being written, not on Twitter.
