FTX’s former Bitcoin mining bet gets new life as parent raises €800 million for AI

A former FTX-backed bitcoin mining giant just raised nearly a billion dollars to pivot toward AI, proving that power-hungry infrastructure is the new gold for large-scale founders.

We have entered the era of the great hardware pivot. The recent news that a parent company tied to Genesis Digital Assets—a firm once heavily bankrolled by the FTX estate—has secured 800 million euros in fresh equity is not just another headline about a big raise. It is a signal that the physical infrastructure once dedicated to securing the Bitcoin network is being repurposed for the massive compute demands of artificial intelligence.

For those who weren't tracking the drama, Genesis Digital Assets was one of Sam Bankman-Fried’s largest bets. When the house of cards collapsed, many expected these massive mining operations to be liquidated for pennies on the dollar. Instead, we are seeing the opposite. The underlying assets—land, grid connections, and cooling systems—are being revalued as the foundation for the AI revolution.

The Real Estate Play of the Century

As a founder, you have to look past the brand names and focus on the logistics. Bitcoin mining and AI model training share a common bottleneck: power. In the current market, access to high-voltage electricity and the permits to use it are arguably more valuable than the software itself. The entity behind this raise, Northern Data, is essentially proving that they can take the bones of a crypto operation and skin it for a new monster.

This isn't just about swapping out ASICs for H100s. It is about the fundamental realization that the digital world is limited by the physical world. The 800 million euro equity injection serves as a validation that investors no longer see these massive data centers as volatile crypto plays, but as essential infrastructure for the next decade of silicon-based intelligence.

Why Builders Should Care About the Pivot

If you are building in the crypto or AI space, this shift matters for three specific reasons. First, it changes the valuation metrics for hardware-heavy startups. We are moving away from speculative multiples and toward infrastructure-backed valuations. If you own the power, you own the leverage.

Second, it signals a massive squeeze on compute availability. As these former mining sites transition to AI, they aren't necessarily opening up capacity for the average developer. They are scaling for the giants. This means smaller founders need to be smarter about how they source their compute. You cannot rely on the overflow from the big players because there is no overflow anymore.

Third, it highlights the importance of adaptability. The leadership at Northern Data and their affiliates recognized early that Bitcoin mining is a race to the bottom on margins, whereas AI compute currently offers a premium. They didn't stay married to the original mission when the market shifted; they followed the demand for throughput.

The Skeptic’s View on the FTX Legacy

We have to be honest here. The fact that this capital is tied back to the FTX ecosystem will leave a bad taste in some people’s mouths. The liquidation of FTX assets has been a long, messy process, and seeing new life breathed into these specific entities can feel like a rewrite of history. However, from a purely operational perspective, it is a masterclass in asset preservation.

The recovery for creditors often depends on these assets performing well. If a mining site sits dormant, its value decays. By pivoting to AI, the management team is effectively increasing the liquidation value of the estate's holdings, even if the optics are complicated. It is a reminder that in tech, pragmatism usually beats purity.

The Decentralized Compute Reality Check

There is a lot of talk in the builder community about decentralized AI and DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks). While I love the idea of a world where we aren't beholden to massive data centers, this 800 million euro raise is a reality check. Centralized, massive-scale facilities still hold the keys to the kingdom because of their efficiency and speed of deployment.

If you are building a DePIN project, your competition isn't just other crypto startups. Your competition is a mining giant that just got a billion-dollar war chest to buy every GPU on the market and plug them into a grid they already own. To compete, decentralized builders must offer something these giants cannot: censorship resistance and community-driven data privacy. You won't beat them on raw price-to-performance yet.

What This Means for the Next Two Years

Expect more of this. Any Bitcoin mining operation that has a stable connection to a power grid and hasn't yet explored an AI pivot is leaving money on the table. We are going to see a consolidation of power—literally. The firms that controlled the hash rate in 2021 are going to be the ones controlling the inference rates in 2026.

For the founders on the ground, the takeaway is clear: stop looking at AI and Crypto as two separate silos. The bridge between them is the physical hardware. If you are building software, ensure your stack is hardware-agnostic. If you are building hardware, make sure you have more than one type of customer.

The value isn't in the coin or the model; the value is in the ability to turn electricity into answers. Those who own the transformation process are the ones who will survive the next cycle.

Ultimately, the rebirth of these FTX-linked assets is a testament to the resilience of physical infrastructure. Bitcoin gave these companies the capital to build the forts, and AI is giving them the reason to defend them. Stay skeptical of the hype, but don't ignore the movement of the money. When 800 million euros enters the room, the room changes.
