Bitcoin holds near $65,000 as $800 billion AI selloff leaves crypto largely untouched

While major tech stocks crumble under the weight of unproven AI spending, Bitcoin is holding steady, signaling a potential decoupling from the traditional Nasdaq correlation.

The AI Reality Check Hits Wall Street

For the last eighteen months, the market has been riding a wave of pure euphoria centered on artificial intelligence. The narrative was simple: buy the Magnificent Seven, wait for the AI-driven productivity gains, and watch the numbers go up indefinitely. But as we saw this week, the bill is finally coming due. When Alphabet and Tesla released their latest figures, investors didn't see the immediate, massive returns they were promised. Instead, they saw billions of dollars being poured into capital expenditures with a timeline for ROI that looks increasingly fuzzy.

The result was a brutal $800 billion selloff in the tech sector, the worst single-day performance we have seen since the spring of 2025. Usually, when the Nasdaq bleeds this heavily, the crypto markets are the first to get slaughtered. Bitcoin has spent the better part of three years acting like a high-beta version of tech stocks. When investors panic about high-growth assets, they usually dump their most volatile holdings first. That almost always means digital assets. But this time, something changed.

The Great Decoupling

As the Magnificent Seven shed nearing a trillion dollars in market cap, Bitcoin barely blinked. It held firm around the $65,000 mark, moving less than 1% during the heat of the equity rout. To anyone who has been building in this space for a decade, this is a significant development. We are seeing a divergence from the standard correlation that has plagued our industry since the institutionalization of crypto began.

For builders, this is the first real sign that Bitcoin might be regaining its status as an alternative asset rather than just an extension of the traditional tech trade. If the AI bubble—or at least the AI spending bubble—is starting to leak, capital needs a place to go. If it stays in Bitcoin while leaving the Nasdaq, it validates the long-held thesis that crypto serves as a hedge against the concentration risks of a few dominant tech giants.

Why the AI Narrative is Faltering

The skepticism hitting the AI sector isn't about the technology being useless. It is about the math. Companies are spending hundreds of billions on GPUs and data centers without a clear path to monetization that justifies the astronomical valuations of their stocks. Investors are starting to ask the hard questions: Where are the customers? What is the actual margin on these AI services? When does the spending slow down?

Crypto, for all its flaws and volatility, has a different value proposition right now. We have transitioned from the speculative mania of 2021 into a period of infrastructure building and regulatory clarity. While the AI giants are being forced to defend their massive overhead, the decentralized nature of crypto projects often allows for leaner operations and more transparent, on-chain proof of utility.

The Altcoin Lag

It wasn't a clean sweep of stability across the entire crypto board. While Bitcoin stood its ground, the altcoin market showed more sensitivity. Dogecoin led the majors lower, which shouldn't surprise anyone. In times of uncertainty, the market flows toward the assets with the most established Lindy Effect. Bitcoin is the primary beneficiary of this flight to safety within the digital asset ecosystem.

This is a lesson for founders. When the macro environment gets shaky, the market stops gambling on memes and starts looking for assets that have survived multiple cycles. If you are building a project right now, the takeaway is clear: your survival depends on being perceived as an essential piece of the new financial rail, not a speculative toy that relies on the overflow of tech stock greed.

What This Means for Founders

If you are a builder in the crypto or AI space, this shift should change your strategy. We are moving out of the "infinite growth" phase and into the "show me the money" phase. The tech selloff proves that investors are losing patience with vaporware and far-off promises.

  • Focus on Capital Efficiency: The AI selloff was sparked by massive spending with low immediate returns. Don't fall into that trap. Keep your burn low and focus on paths to revenue that don't rely on constant venture infusions.
  • Monitor the Correlation: Keep a close eye on how Bitcoin reacts to the next few rounds of tech earnings. If this decoupling persists, it marks a new era for crypto as a truly independent asset class.
  • Build for Utility: The projects that survived the recent volatility were those with deep liquidity and actual use cases. Hype is a depreciating asset.

We are seeing a maturation of the market in real-time. The fact that an $800 billion wipeout in tech didn't trigger a 10-15% crash in Bitcoin is a testament to how far this industry has come. It suggests that the holders currently in the market are not just retail traders looking for a quick flip, but institutional and long-term participants who see Bitcoin as a distinct entity from the AI-driven mania of Silicon Valley.

The Long Game

I have always been a bit of a skeptic when it comes to the "crypto follows Nasdaq" narrative because it ignores the fundamental differences in why these assets exist. One is a collection of centralized corporations subject to interest rates and quarterly earnings reports; the other is a decentralized network designed to operate outside of those very constraints. This week's price action is the first piece of evidence in a long time that the market is finally starting to see that gap.

The AI revolution is still happening, but the financial froth is being blown off the top. For those of us building in crypto, this is our opportunity. While the tech giants are busy explaining their billions in losses to shareholders, we are building the permissionless systems that will likely settle the value generated by that very AI in the future. Stay focused, keep the overhead low, and don't let the noise in the equity markets distract you from the fact that the underlying fundamentals of the crypto economy are stronger than they have been in years.
